Grounding‐Zone Flow Variability of Priestley Glacier, Antarctica, in a Diurnal Tidal Regime

چکیده
Tidal modulation of ice streams and their adjacent shelves is a real-world experiment to understand ice-dynamic processes. We observe the dynamics Priestley Glacier, Antarctica, using Terrestrial Radar Interferometry (TRI) GNSS. Ocean tides are predominantly diurnal but horizontal GNSS displacements also oscillate semi-diurnally. The oscillations strongest in shelf tidal signatures decay near-linearly TRI data over 10 km upstream grounding line. flexing observed 6 line including cm-scale uplift. migration small 40% thickness. frequency doubling relative ocean consistent with variable ice-shelf buttressing demonstrated visco-elastic Maxwell model. Taken together, this supports previously hypothesized flexural softening grounding-zone through offers new observational constraints for role rheology buttressing.

Flow dynamics of Byrd Glacier, East Antarctica
Force-balance calculations on Byrd Glacier, East Antarctica, reveal large spatial variations in the along-flow component of driving stress with corresponding sticky spots that are stationary over time. On the large scale, flow resistance is partitioned between basal (80%) and lateral (20%) drag. Ice flow is due mostly to basal sliding and concentrated vertical shear in the basal ice layers, i...
متن کاملGreenland outlet glacier ice - flow variability
1 I ce mass loss from the Greenland Ice Sheet is a primary contributor to global sea level rise. The rate of ice loss has accelerated over the last couple of decades and Greenland currently contributes about 0.7-1.1 mm/yr to sea-level rise (260-380 Gt/ice per year; Enderlin et al. 2014; Shepherd et al. 2012). Predicting the potential rate and limits of future mass loss requires a clear understa...
متن کاملEvidence for non-tidal diurnal velocity variations of Helheim Glacier, East Greenland
We have used tide-gauge data from near Helheim Glacier, East Greenland, and GPS data acquired on the glacier to investigate the spectra of tidal forcing and flow response. For both the tidegauge and GPS time series, we calculated amplitudes and phases for a harmonic expansion using a limited set of harmonic constituents. We find that the semidiurnal constituents of the glacier flow are well mod...
متن کاملSurface "Waves" on Byrd Glacier, Antarctica
Byrd Glacier has one of the largest ice catchment areas in Antarctica, delivers more ice to the Ross Ice Shelf than any other ice stream, and is the fastest of these ice streams. A force balance, combined with a mass balance, demonstrates that stream flow in Byrd Glacier is transitional from sheet flow in East Antarctica to shelf flow in the Ross Ice Shelf. The longitudinal pulling stress, calc...
